What to Expect when you attend Psychosexual Therapy

Psychosexual therapy is a structured approach to addressing sexual and relational difficulties, using techniques like Sensate Focus, CBT, and mindfulness. The process typically includes the following steps:

  1. Initial Assessment: In this session, both partners (if attending as a couple) share their perspectives on the issues and their hopes for change. I assess suitability for psychosexual therapy and begin to understand the concerns.
  2. Individual History Taking: Each person meets separately to discuss their personal history and experiences. This helps the therapist understand the biological, psychological, and social factors influencing the issues.
  3. Formulation: The therapist synthesizes the information from the history-taking sessions to create a clear picture of the issues and goals for therapy.
  4. Roundtable: The therapist meets with the couple or individual to discuss the formulation, set therapy goals, and establish tasks to be completed at home.
  5. Treatment Phase: The focus is on working towards the goals set in the formulation. Regular reviews of progress and new tasks are introduced, with psychoeducation on relevant topics like sexual function, intimacy, and communication.
  6. Ending Therapy: Therapy concludes when the goals are met. The therapist and client review progress, address any remaining concerns, and ensure the client can handle future challenges independently.

The therapy aims to empower individuals and couples to address difficulties and build lasting well-being.

What to expect when you attend Relationship Therapy

Relationship therapy helps individuals or couples address challenges in their relationships, such as communication issues, emotional distance, or unmet needs.

The process looks as follows:

  1. Initial Assessment: In this session, both partners (if attending as a couple) share their perspectives on the issues and their hopes for change. I will assess suitability for relationship therapy and start to understand the issues that bring you to therapy.
  2. Individual History Taking: I meet each person individually to take their personal history and experiences. This helps me understand the biological, psychological, and social factors influencing the issues.
  3. Formulation: Having completed the individual history take, I will review the information from the history-taking sessions to create a clear picture of the issues and goals for therapy.
  4. Roundtable: I will meet with the couple or individual to discuss the formulation, agree therapy goals, and discuss tasks to be completed at home (if any).
  5. The work: The work is tailored to your needs and the issues you bring, but some key components of the work will include Relationship Dynamics; Effective Communication Skills; Building Empathy and Trust; Setting Goals and Creating Positive Change; and Maintaining Long-Term Relationship Health.

Relationship therapy is an ongoing commitment to growth, requiring continuous effort, understanding, and communication. I am committed to working with you to address difficulties and build lasting well-being.

How I work as a Relational Integrative Psychotherapist

My practice room is a safe and private space where you can truly be heard. I believe that being seen and listened to are fundamental to the human experience. That’s why I take a client-centered approach - one that begins with you and acknowledges that you are the expert in your own life and story. You also hold the key to unlocking the answers within, guiding you on a path toward meaning-making, healing and change.

This is your space to share your story, and it’s entirely up to you what you choose to bring into the therapeutic process.

As a relational integrative therapist, I draw on interventions underpinned

by psychodynamic, person-centred and humanistic theories of therapy, as well as incorporating mindfulness techniques. Throughout our work together, I take an interest in exploring early childhood experiences and significant life events, and how these may have shaped the adult. I believe in going beneath the surface to truly understand your experiences, offering your story a voice, meaningful insight and autonomy to make the desired changes in your life.

Intersectional approach

Having emigrated to the UK from Zambia over 30 years ago, and had the privilege to travel and work across diverse regions - including Africa, Asia, Australia, Canada, the Caribbean, India, and the Pacific - I have developed a profound appreciation for diversity. These global experiences have enriched my understanding of, and respect for, the unique lived experiences of individuals from various cultural and social backgrounds.

As we work together, we will take an intersectional approach, placing your personal story at the center of our journey. Your experiences and perspectives will guide and shape the path we embark on, ensuring that our work is truly reflective of who you are.
